Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered many other marked cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state early analysis show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior official said the incident rendered him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
