European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
